En 1842 Joseph Smith, le premier prophète et président de l’Eglise de Jésus-Christ des Saints des Derniers Jours, a écrit 13 croyances de base de cette religion. La numéro 8 dit ceci :

“Nous croyons que la Bible est la parole de Dieu dans la mesure où elle est traduite correctement ; nous croyons aussi que le Livre de Mormon est la parole de Dieu.”

D’un coup toutes les personnes qui ne connaissent pas notre religion se disent sûrement : “Oh là, ça fait beaucoup de blasphèmes dans une seule phrase.” Ne vous inquiétez pas ! On va vous expliquer tout ça.

Dans cet épisode on va examiner deux questions :
1. La Bible est-elle parfaite et infaillible?
2. Et, peut-il y avoir des Ecritures en dehors des pages de la Bible?

On va vite fait parler du Livre de Mormon, mais on vous expliquera plus en détail ce que c’est dans un prochain épisode.

La bible est-elle parfaite et infaillible ?

Oui, nous croyons que la Bible est un livre d’Ecritures dans la mesure où elle est traduite correctement. Nous croyons qu’il peut y avoir des erreurs dans la Bible. Nous croyons que Dieu a inspiré les hommes pour l’écrire, mais ce sont des hommes mortels qui l’ont écrite. Elle n’a pas été écrite littéralement par le doigt de Dieu comme les 10 commandements. Des hommes imparfaits l’ont écrite, d’autres hommes imparfaits l’ont canonisée, d’autres hommes imparfaits l’ont traduite maintes et maintes fois. On n’espère qu’aucun d’eux n’a fait exprès d’y mettre le désordre, mais les saints des derniers jours ne sont pas fermés à l’existence de l’erreur humaine dans le texte biblique.

Voici un exemple assez innocent : quand Saul est en route vers Damas avec d’autres personnes une lumière surgit et le Christ ressuscité lui apparaît. Actes 9:7 dit : “Les hommes qui l’accompagnaient demeurèrent stupéfaits; ils entendaient bien la voix, mais ils ne voyaient personne.”

Mais quand cette histoire est re-racontée dans Actes 22:9, Paul dit : “Ceux qui étaient avec moi virent bien la lumière, mais ils n’entendirent pas la voix de celui qui parlait. »

C’est un petit souci qui n’affecte pas beaucoup l’histoire de la Bible, mais voilà le problème : Si vous croyez que la Bible est sans défaut, vous devez concilier ces deux Ecritures d’une façon ou d’une autre. Et les gens ont effectivement trouvé des moyens de le faire. Les saints des derniers jours peuvent aussi essayer de les concilier, on les voit et on se dit : “Heu … c’est étrange. J’imagine que quelqu’un n’a pas écrit correctement cette histoire.”

Nous croyons que la doctrine de l’infaillibilité biblique n’est pas un enseignement clair dans la Bible elle-même. Comment ça se fait ? Le Nouveau Testament tel que nous le connaissons n’existait pas avant 200 ans après que le dernier livre n’ait été écrit. Aucun des auteurs n’écrivait dans le but d’avoir une Bible cohérente, mais plutôt leur propre ouvrage séparé, avec quelques commentaires sur des ouvrages passés qu’ils avaient à disposition. Et aucun de ces ouvrages n’affirme être parfaitement exact.

De plus, nous croyons que de nombreuses “vérités précieuses et simples” extrêmement importantes contenues dans la Bible ont été perdues de la Bible avec les siècles. Notamment mais pas uniquement : la véritable nature de Dieu, l’importance des principes de l’Évangile et des ordonnances, en particulier à l’époque de l’Ancien Testament, certains enseignements sur la vie pré-mortelle, et autres.

Peut-il y avoir des Ecritures en dehors des pages de la Bible?

Dans son ensemble, la Bible est une source inspirée de vérité, mais nous ne croyons pas qu’elle soit parfaite ni que ce soit tout ce que Dieu avait à nous dire. Au contraire, la Bible est la preuve que Dieu a toujours appelé des prophètes pour transmettre sa parole à ses enfants, où qu’ils soient. La Bible est le récit de ces enseignements prophétiques d’Afrique, d’Asie et d’Europe. Nous croyons que Dieu a aussi appelé des prophètes dans les Amériques. Le récit de leurs enseignements s’appelle Le Livre de Mormon. “Mormon” étant juste le nom d’un prophète, comme Moïse ou Pierre.

Certaines personnes sont, naturellement, méfiantes du Livre de Mormon parce que la Bible dit clairement dans l’Apocalypse : “ Je le déclare à quiconque entend les paroles de la prophétie de ce livre : Si quelqu’un y ajoute quelque chose, Dieu le frappera des fléaux décrits dans ce livre.” Nous le tenons là, n’est-ce pas ? La Bible est la dernière des paroles écrites de Dieu. Tout autre chose affirmant être Ecriture est hérétique, n’est-ce pas ?

C’est une interprétation compréhensible, mais encore une fois, nous devons nous souvenir que lorsque ce verset a été écrit, le Nouveau Testament n’existait pas encore. Ce verset ne s’applique qu’au livre de l’Apocalypse, il dit même : “ la prophétie de ce livre.” L’apocalypse était un ouvrage indépendant à l’époque. En plus de cela, des Écritures similaires existent dans l’Ancien Testament, mais nous choisissons de les interpréter différemment, sinon elles condamneraient la plupart de l’Ancien et tout le Nouveau Testament. Nulle part dans la Bible il est dit que les Ecritures ne peuvent pas exister en dehors de ces 66 livres choisis pour être canonisés. Nous croyons que c’est un enseignement extra-biblique, ce qui est un peu ironique.

En fait, la Bible elle-même fait référence à d’autres livres d’Ecritures que nous n’avons pas dans la Bible.

Maintenant, au cas où vous auriez un doute, sachez que les Saints des Derniers Jours aiment la Bible. Je crois que c’est un livre d’Ecritures. Les Saints des Derniers Jours tiennent à la Bible, tout comme nous tenons au Livre de Mormon. Nous croyons que les deux sont inspirés de Dieu et qu’ils vont de pair pour nous enseigner la foi en Jésus-Christ, notre Sauveur.

Si vous ne connaissez pas le Livre de Mormon, bien sûr, je ne m’attends pas à ce que vous me croyez sur parole quand je dis que c’est un livre d’Écritures. Tout comme vous avez dû découvrir par vous-même que la Bible est vraie, vous devez faire le travail spirituel qu’il faut pour savoir que Le Livre de Mormon l’est aussi.
